How These Maps Are Created
When we take the dogs on walks, I carry a Garmin eTrex Legend CX Handheld GPS Navigator and my iPhone 3G running InstaMapper GPS Tracker. They both record our position at regular intervals. The Garmin saves them as a track for later downloading while the iPhone sends our position to my InstaMapper account for the live map on this page.
When we get home, I use GPSBabel to download the track from the GPS and save it as a KML file. I open the file in Google Earth and add it to my master “dogwalk” folder (containing the tracks for all of our walks) which I then re-save as a KML file. Finally, I upload the resulting file to my server and add the link to Google Maps, telling it where to find my KML file. For example:
