Who We Are

Gumption is a user experience and technical consultancy founded by Jennifer and Thomas Bohmbach.

We have been around long enough to know that projects rarely go as they should. There are too many variables to predict what will happen. Things always change. A key to success for teams today is to practice strong communication and collaboration. We are experienced in adapting in those situations. We believe in providing value in ever shifting landscapes.

I was paid for my first “open source” program in 1988.

I’ve developed high-end digital photography software. I’ve developed a dot-bomb start-up’s web site and done the same for a major US airline. I’ve developed a custom high-volume service oriented architecture for a major health insurance group.

So now I’m working on the DJ Edna Project, an open-source digital distribution/e-commerce system for independent musicians and Giftag, Best Buy’s universal gift registry that runs on Google App Engine. As part of developing Giftag, I also started two open-source projects: Gaegene, a set of utilities and mix-in models to help implement common design patterns on GAE, and Premix, an easy to use Python wrapper around the Best Buy Remix APIs.

All are developed using Django.

I went to college and earned my English/Theater double major. As it turns out, that was the perfect educational foundation for the work I do today – User Experience. It taught me how to collaborate and adjust to fast changing circumstances.

Ever since 1995 I’ve been helping people communicate using the Internet. The people I have helped have worked for big companies and small companies. I have helped on small teams and large teams as an employee, vendor or consultant. I LOVE helping companies address these challenges. I think it is especially exciting because the landscape is ever-shifting and its impossible to keep up on your own.

The main thing I have found over the years is that every situation is different and cookie cutter approaches don’t apply. Teams come in many shapes and sizes these days, companies need help navigating. I’m flexible enough to fit into your team in a way that works for you.
